Who Should NOT Buy IUL
🤝 Our Honest Approach
We believe in transparency. IUL is a powerful wealth-building tool for the right people, but it's not perfect for everyone. If we can't genuinely help you, we'll be the first to tell you—and point you toward better alternatives. Your financial success matters more than making a sale.
❌ You Should NOT Buy IUL If...
You Need Short-Term Access to Money
IUL is designed as a long-term strategy (10+ years). In the early years, policy fees reduce cash value growth.
Better Alternatives:
- High-yield savings account
- Money market fund
- Short-term bond fund
You Can't Afford the Premiums
If paying premiums would strain your budget or prevent you from covering essential expenses, IUL is not appropriate.
Better Alternatives:
- Build emergency fund first
- Pay off high-interest debt
- Start with employer 401(k) match
You Have Serious Health Issues
IUL requires medical underwriting. Severe health conditions may result in declined coverage or very high premiums that make it uneconomical.
Better Alternatives:
- Roth IRA (no health requirements)
- HSA contributions
- Guaranteed issue life insurance for coverage
You Only Care About Maximum Returns
If your sole goal is the highest possible returns and you're comfortable with full market risk, IUL's protection may not be worth the insurance costs.
Better Alternatives:
- Low-cost index funds
- Aggressive growth portfolio
- Individual stocks
You're Over 65 and Haven't Started
IUL needs time to build cash value. Starting after 65 means higher premiums and less time for growth, making it less effective.
Better Alternatives:
- Immediate annuities for income
- Fixed indexed annuities
- Conservative bond portfolio
You Don't Understand How It Works
IUL has moving parts. If you're not willing to learn how policy loans, crediting, and costs work, you shouldn't buy it.
Better Alternatives:
- Simple index funds
- Target-date retirement funds
- Robo-advisor managed portfolio
🚩 Major Red Flags When Considering IUL
Be cautious if you encounter any of these situations:
- Agent promises specific returns: No one can guarantee what index credits will be. Run from anyone showing "guaranteed" 10%+ returns.
- Pressure to buy immediately: Legitimate advisors give you time to review illustrations, ask questions, and make informed decisions.
- No discussion of fees: If the agent won't clearly explain costs, insurance charges, and how they impact your cash value, that's a problem.
- Replacing an existing policy without analysis: Policy replacements may make sense sometimes, but require careful analysis—not rushed decisions.
- Funded with retirement account rollover: Rolling 401(k) or IRA money into IUL triggers taxes and may not make sense. Get a second opinion.
- "This is better than a Roth IRA": IUL has advantages, but blanket statements that it's "better" ignore important tradeoffs.
✅ Who SHOULD Consider IUL
IUL works best for people who:
- Have a 10-15+ year time horizon: Gives the policy time to overcome early fees and build substantial cash value
- Are already maxing out other retirement accounts: Have maxed 401(k), IRA contributions and want additional tax-advantaged space
- Want market protection: Value the 0% floor protection and are willing to accept caps on upside
- Need tax-free income: Expect to be in same or higher tax bracket in retirement
- Want flexibility: May need to access funds before 59½ without penalties
- Have consistent income: Can comfortably afford premiums for at least 10-15 years
- Want life insurance anyway: Need death benefit protection in addition to retirement savings
- Are in good health: Can qualify for standard or better insurance rates
